Atlanta Community Food Bank, Inc.

732 Joseph E. Lowery Blvd. Nw
Atlanta, GA 30318
(404) 892-3333

Services

Their mission is to fight hunger by engaging, educating empowering their community. As one of the largest Food Banks in the southeast, distributing nearly 34 million pounds of food annually, they provide food primarily to children and youth (about 50%), but food recipients also include low-income families, senior citizens and the homeless. 94% of total budget is used toward programs. The Food Bank also operates several community projects to aid their agencies in community building, technical assistance and advocacy efforts.

The Food Bank works with food manufacturers, distributors and retailers to secure donations of perishable and non-perishable food and household products. Furthermore, corporations, schools, civic groups and religious organizations host over 500 community food drives. In addition to their core food distribution program, the Food Bank has a number of projects that help build community, including: Atlanta?s Table: collects and delivers prepared foods from hotels, restaurants, convention centers and cafeterias to 40 daily meal programs, preventing food waste while saving added preparation costs for these feeding agencies. Hunger 101 Education Program: educates youth, families and adults alike on the issues of hunger and poverty and supports advocacy efforts to reduce poverty. Community Gardens: turns vacant lots in low-income neighborhoods into vegetable gardens where residents work together to grow their own produce, currently supporting over 176 local gardens. Kids In Need: provides hundreds of thousands of brand new, free school supplies to teachers in 215 low-income schools to ensure that children in need have even the most basic learning tools to succeed in school. The Publix Reclamation Center: rescues several million pounds of slightly damaged food items from grocery stores that previously were being shipped to Florida. Hunger Walk/Run: raises money for 6 hunger relief organizations and involves over 10,000 walkers and runners. The Volunteer Program engages more than 15,000 volunteers annually by organizing food drives, sorting damaged products and packing emergency food boxes for agencies that feed the hungry.
